The Berlin Post School for Physical Theatre-Dance is opening its activities in collaboration with Tanzfabrik Berlin with a unique program. The main objective of the Post School is to empower the "creative performer", self-aware and completely open to investigating subjects from various perspectives within a solid, rigorous and updated basis of Physical Theatre-Dance knowledge/experience.
Our programs are designed for stage artists who already have different kinds of experiences within their own art form. That is why we define our course as a "Post-School" experience.
We interweave our programs through a training structure consisting of an extensive array of body languages partly deriving from physical actions (theatre orientated), Butoh and Contact Dance to Bharata Natyam (traditional Indian dance) and martial arts (Kung Fu, Aikido). The vocal training includes various vocal techniques and experimental voice work. Its emphasis is on the kinaesthetic aspects of voice/ body and creation of layers, textures and patterns. In conjunction with these elements of bodily and vocal training theoretical and practical work is integrated in the work of composition in space, improvisation and critical analysis of performance practices.
We use the culturally emerging platform of Berlin to see a vast variety of theatre plays, dance, performances, film and installations etc. establishing a dialog and reflexive thinking with our own way of conceiving the phenomenon of stage arts.
As mentioned before we are one the only places in Europe where professional stage artists can deepen their art in an intensive 3 months Post School Course. The program is based on the practical doing in concrete solo and group projects. There are two main lines at The Berlin Post School:
- The student comes already (to our Post School) with a project he/she would like to research and develops during the 3 months period. All the material and input he/she gets from the classes and teachers are in order to deepen its personal/group work.
- The student comes with several inputs but with no concrete personal project. Students and post school director will in common agreement find subjects and texts to develop creative material.
In both cases the students will create their material in both “in and out doors” spaces (Site specific). The students are constantly presenting their material or “work in progress” in order to get feed back from the other colleagues and teachers. At end of the course, the Post School is having final presentations of the developed projects within the post school period in the spaces of Tanzfabrik Berlin.
We are accepting applications from artists and advanced students who have formal training or former experience of at least 3 years in physical theatre (also other approaches as Lecoq, Decroux, Grotowski orientated or Cirque Nouveau.) and/or dance.
We cannot accept students who are still in a theatre/dance education. The minimum age for applicants is 23.
The Berlin Post School of Physical Theatre-Dance will be holding an audition on 13th and 14 February 2010 in Berlin.
If you can not attend this workshop you can send us a “Youtube” link with 5 to 8 minutes of your work where it is very clear to see your artistic approach and your physical skills. Be very selective with the material. The video must not have cuts, special effects or bizarre visual perspectives.
The applicant must send a complete Curriculum Vitae plus a Motivation Letter sharing with us your reason to do our program plus a description of the project that you would like to develop (in case you have a concrete project) or concrete performance themes that you would like to work on.
Please send us this material to physicaltheater@gmail.com.
Due to mainly international applications we have extended the deadline is 28 February 2010.
The applicants will get the admission answer (yes or no) via e-mail by 8 March 2010.
Financial Aid
The Berlin Post School itself does not provide bursaries or scholarships. Students from abroad are encouraged to apply for assistance in their home country. The Post School will make every effort to assist where possible.
Accommodation
The Post School does not provide accommodation for its students. Rent-sharing and co-operative living with other students is often a strategy. Berlin is one of the cheapest cities in Europe with many possibilities for finding reasonable shared apartments. The Post School will provide information and an advice package on accommodation options to students accepted into our program.
Visas for Non EU Students
We are not able to provide student visas for Germany. Every country out of the EU Community has different policies regarding the entry to a European country. You should find out at the consulate of Germany in your own country. Any tourist visa will entitle you to enter Germany and Europe for a period of three
